History

My name is Alberto, and my business partner is Luigi, we are the owners of Highway Bagels. We're on Kings Highway in the Midwood section of South Brooklyn. Highway Bagels has been serving the community since 1951. Highway Bagels is one of the first and oldest bagels stores to be established in Brooklyn and still operating, so we're knocking on 73 years! That's a lot of bagels and HB is a true icon amongst bagel stores.

We were originally a wholesale only bagel store and supplied some of the largest stores and purveyors in the New York City area. But over the years we have added more and more items and now we’re the Highway Bagels that you know and love today. Some people ask us how do you do it?  How have you lasted all these years? My answer is we haven't changed a single thing. We still have the same recipe from 1951 and it's our recipe not a group of rollers that come in and are hired to use their recipe. It's our people rolling, our people making the bagels and we’re the ones that taste it and check it every single day. I think that's what makes us different.

We’re an old school New York City kettle bagel, the original. We only use five ingredients.  Our bagels are batched proofed and kept in The Walk-in box for 24 hours before we take them out, boil them and then bake them. It's a very labor intense process but we wouldn't change one thing. That's why they taste as good as they taste, and that's why we've been here for all these years. This is the same approach we use for all our food. Everything that can be made in house, is made here daily. From our fresh mozzarella to our hero and rolls for our sandwiches, to muffins croissants and much more. It's like eating at your mother's house and that's only if your mom's a good cook.

So, the next time you're on King's highway or even near it, stop into HB at 1923 Kings Highway and enjoy one of the best bagels you've ever had, not to mention our award-winning bacon egg and cheese. You’ll have to come in and see it for yourself. Remember change is good, but some things are best left alone, like HB so come on in.

We would like to express our thanks and gratitude to you our customers for allowing us to serve you for all these years. It couldn't have been possible without you. Highway Bagels is committed to providing the best quality baked goods and gourmet sandwiches and service we can.

Thank You.

We are a proud supplier of the
New York City Road Runners Club & Marathon since the 1980's.

Come see what made us the best bagels in Brooklyn 2023 and 2024, and Best Bacon egg and cheese 2024

We did it  we're everyone's favorite Brooklyn neighborhood Bagel Spot and it's official!! We were voted #1 by Brooklyn Bites instagram. Now everyone else knows what we always knew all along.  We couldn't have done it without all our family, friends and loyal customer's support.

Thanks for letting us serve you all these years and we look forward to the years to come.

King's Highway

The roadway is reputedly named after King George III — the British monarch who ruled during the American Revolution — and the roots of Kings Highway predate even the first Dutch colonists. Over the centuries, it has slowly evolved into the road we know today.

Kings Highway began as a trail used by the Canarsee Indians before it was adapted by the Dutch to connect smaller roads and cow paths in Brooklyn’s early settlements. The road is considered one of the first to be officially called a highway in the New World. Peter Stuyvesant used the term in a document dated June 4, 1654. Meanwhile, the name “Kings Highway” has been in use for more than 200 years.

Ode To A Bagel by Gary Shulman

When childhood Saturday memories
Dance blithely in my brain
And vintage morning cartoon delights
Live on in my cerebral terrain

Another childhood supreme delight
Still resonates i n my ancient tummy
The Saturday morning bagel feast
Nothing else was ever more yummy!

And to this very day in time
My well worn body still yearns
For nutrition devoid circles of dough
Yes, for bagels my desire still burns!
